You're not going to get far without roller skates. But a skater cannot do without a well-fitting and comfortable skate helmet. It protects your head, perhaps the most important part of your body. So always invest in a quality skate helmet from Sucker Punch Skate Shop.

Buying the right roller skate helmet

Your skate helmet is one of the most important parts of your protection as a roller skater. To make sure you buy one that offers you both safety and comfort, it's best to take these factors into account:

  • Your skating style: will you be riding leisurely around the neighbourhood or trying out spectacular tricks at the skate park? For some options, a basic model will suffice; for others, a bit more protection is no luxury.
  • Beginner or advanced: we don't sell helmets that don't protect. But beginners reach lower speeds than advanced riders. For them, a cheaper helmet is usually sufficient.
  • The size of your helmet: you choose it so that your new helmet is neither too loose nor too tight, but fits perfectly comfortably on your head.

Determining the size of your roller skate helmet

One of the most important factors when choosing your new skate helmet is the size. This way, you can be sure that your new head protection fits neatly and is neither too tight nor too loose.

To determine the size of your skate helmet, all you need is a simple tape measure. Use it to determine the circumference of your head. Hold the tape measure above your eyebrows and on the sides above your ears. The largest possible circumference is your ideal helmet size. Then use the general table below to tell the centimetres to everything from XXS to XXL.

Just keep in mind that each brand has different sizes and different scales for adult helmets. Within that, you personalise further by changing the liner, the inner lining of your helmet.

  • S1 uses Mini Lifer, Lifer and Mega Lifer for the sizes of their helmet shells.
  • TSG works with S/M, L/XL and XXL.
  • At Triple Eight, you'll find sizes XS/S, S/M, L/XL and XL/XXL.
  • SFR uses XXS/XS, S/M and L/XL.

Cheaper helmets usually offer fewer options in terms of sizing, for example, they are only available in sizes XS/S, M/L and XL. More expensive helmets range from XXS to XXXL. Some brands even have Minihelmets for small heads andMegahelmets for large ones. Mini helmets are perfect for the youngest. Also be sure to consider other protection for children when roller skating.

Safety standards for roller skate helmets

Official safety standards give you assurance about the comfort and protection your skate helmet offers. For example, check that your new helmet for roller skating meets one of these standards:

  • the F1492-22 'Standard specification for helmets used during skateboarding and figure skating' by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM)
  • the EN 1078 standard for 'Helmets for cyclists and for users of skateboards and roller skates' of the Comité Européen de Normalisation (CEN)
  • the 16 CFR 1203 'Safety standard for bicycle helmets' of the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)

Replacing your skate helmet on time

Ordering a new skate helmet is a good first step to protect your head when rollerblading. But don't forget to replace it on time. In the following cases, we recommend buying a new skate helmet to keep you optimally protected.

  • The helmets we sell are multi-impact, i.e. resistant to multiple impacts. However, you are required to replace them after they have absorbed a major shock.
  • Do you see cracks or other damage with the naked eye? Even then, you should go for a new skate helmet as soon as possible.
  • Depending on your use, it is a good idea to replace your helmet after 3 to maximum 5 years anyway.

More roller skate protection than just a helmet

Safety first. That's why at Sucker Punch Skate Shop you will find a very wide range of protective materials. For example, we sell specific roller derby helmets to protect you while practising your favourite sport, but also protection for recreational skating.
