Shop tools to maintain and upgrade your quads

Skate a lot? Then sooner or later you’ll be adjusting, replacing, or upgrading. Wheels wear out, toe stops need to be tighter, or you want a truck that turns a bit smoother. That’s when you need the right roller skate tools.

With the right tool you’ll not only extend the life of your gear — you’ll also skate safer and more comfortably. Below you’ll find the essential tools for each type of plates. We’ll also share the brands we recommend.

Found the tool that does exactly what you need? Click it above to add it to your cart. Or contact our team if you’re unsure which tool fits your setup.

The basics: roller skate tools for standard tweaks

Dial in your wheels, trucks, cushions, and toe stops so your roller skates feel just right. Most of the time, a classic skateboard T-tool will do the trick. It’s perfect for tightening or loosening your skate wheels, adjusting your skate trucks for more or less stability, or making quick axle tweaks.

Some quad skates include a basic mini tool in the box. Handy on the go, but not the strongest or grippiest. Want durable, precise work? It pays to invest in a quality roller skate tool from, for example, PowerDyne (part of Riedell) or RollerBones.

Toe stops: different systems, different tools

Toe stops are a key part of any skate — especially for roller derby skates or dance skates. They determine how well (and how controlled) you stop. Depending on your plates, you’ll need different tools.

  • Non-adjustable 5/16 toe stops: the basic version. To loosen them, use a screwdriver or an Allen key (depending on the hardware the brand uses).
  • Adjustable 5/8 toe stops: the standard on quality plates. They’re often secured with a 5/8″ nut — the PowerDyne Y3 tool is ideal here. The more leverage (longer handle), the easier it is to apply force to the nut.
  • Open clamp systems: higher-end plates are open at the front and clamp the toe stop with a small bolt. You’ll usually use a 5 mm Allen key. Always use the correct size to avoid rounding the bolt head. If it’s already damaged, don’t force it — contact our team so we can remove it safely without harming your plates.

Maintain your bearings with the right roller skate tools

Good bearings are essential for smooth, fast rides. If you swap wheels often, you know how frustrating it is without the proper tool. Choose from these three bearing tools from RollerBones and PowerDyne:

  • Bones Bearing Tool: compact and handy — best if you don’t run spacers between your bearings (the jaws need to open behind the bearing).
  • PowerDyne Hand Tool: suitable for plastic hubs only. A solid pick if you replace bearings occasionally.
  • PowerDyne Bearing Press: the go-to if you change bearings regularly. Works with all hub types (plastic and aluminum), with or without spacers. It seats bearings perfectly straight and lets you apply controlled pressure — a must for tight aluminum hubs.

You’ll also find bearing presses from PowerDyne and Roll Line in our store. It’s an investment that pays off quickly — especially if you run multiple wheel sets or do regular maintenance. For aluminum hubs, the Bones Bearing Press is practically the only sensible choice.
