Control, safety, agility… You rely on your toe stops for way more than just slowing down when you're skating. They help you push off, pivot, and change direction in a flash. At Sucker Punch Skate Shop – the largest roller skate store in Europe – you’ll find a huge selection of toe stops to match your level and skating style. Shop toe stops for the best skating experience

Toe stops – also known as roller skate stoppers or brakes – are located at the front of your skates, underneath your toes. They consist of the cylindrical toe stop and a bolt (stem). Most toe stops are made from durable rubber, but toy skates might use plastic. The stem screws into your skate plate.

Toe stops are essential for slowing down while skating. In roller derby, for example, the “tomahawk” stop is popular – you skate backwards and press down on your toe stops to slow down or come to a stop. They also help you launch into quick starts and agile moves.

Types of roller skate toe stops

Bolt-on toe stops

These toe stops have a fixed length and are not height adjustable. They wear down over time and get shorter. Bolt-on toe stops have a 5/16” stem and will only fit plates with the same threading. You’ll mostly find them on beginner or entry-level skates.

Adjustable toe stops

These are height adjustable, so you can set them exactly how you like. They have a 5/8” stem and only fit plates made for that size. Adjustable toe stops are popular with intermediate to high-end skates, offering more control and flexibility.

Which toe stops are right for your skating style?

Recreational skating

For casual skaters, durable and grippy toe stops are super important. They give you control and safety on different types of surfaces.

Roller derby

In roller derby, quick stops and sharp turns are everything. Toe stops like the Gumball or Bionic Big Foot offer amazing grip and long-lasting performance, perfect for intense use.

Artistic skating

In artistic skating, it’s all about precision and flow. Toe stops like the Roll Line Super Pro are great for jumps and clean movements, with a rounded shape that allows smooth transitions.

How to choose and maintain your toe stops

  • Make sure they fit: Check if the stem size (5/16” or 5/8”) matches your plates. Not sure? Bring your plates when shopping. We’ll gladly help out!
  • Easy to replace: Loosen the nut, remove the old toe stop, and screw in the new one in reverse.
  • Maintenance: Toe stops need very little care, but if they sit unused for a while, they may dry out and harden. In that case, replace them before your next session.
  • Watch out for floor marks: Some toe stops can leave marks and aren’t allowed in certain rinks. Ask us if you're unsure.
