It’s simply a reflex. When you fall, you put your hands out to catch yourself. Your wrists become the first point of contact to reduce the impact. This can lead to sprains, fractures, or other injuries.

Choose the Right Wrist Protection with Our Practical Tips

Alongside a skate helmet, elbow pads, and knee pads, wrist guards (also known as wrist braces) are an essential part of your skate protection gear. Whether you’re a beginner who frequently loses balance or a pro tripping over an uneven surface, skaters fall. So, buying roller skates = buying skate protection. Consider the following:

    • Cheap isn’t always cheerful: the price of wrist guards goes up with quality. Pricier wrist braces generally last longer.
    • Your skating discipline: wrist guards for roller derby may be a bit over the top for roller dancers.
    • Material: in roller derby, for instance, it’s crucial that your wrist guards not only absorb shock but also resist abrasion well.
    • Types of wrist guards: double or single splint? We’ll guide you further down below.
    • Strike a balance: try to find a reasonable compromise between comfort and lasting protection.

Wide Range of Wrist Guards for Roller Skating

    Wrist Guards with Double Splint

The safest wrist guards have a thick piece of plastic (the splint) on both sides of the wrist. Ideally, your wrist sits snugly between these two rigid parts, significantly reducing the risk of breaking.

The size must be right so that your guards hold your wrists securely and provide good support. The thumb opening should also be large enough. Wrist guards should fit well, so you enjoy wearing them every time.

    Wrist Guards with Single Splint

Classic wrist guards with a “double splint” offer excellent protection. However, for added comfort, you can choose ones with only one splint on the palm side, providing some wrist support while protecting the palm from scrapes.

Remember, two rigid parts on each side of the wrist always offer better protection against fractures. But for some skating disciplines, simpler or more comfortable wrist guards may be sufficient. It’s a judgement call you’ll need to make.
