    The history of Sure-Grip roller skates

    In 1937, John L. Wintz founded the Sure-Grip Skate Wheel Company in the garage of his home in Signal Hill. At the time, the small town just south of Los Angeles was basically one big oil field. That gave John access to advanced machinery and high-quality raw materials.

    During the week John worked on the oil rigs, and at weekends he went roller skating with his wife. When he couldn’t find a way to get more grip in the corners, he decided to create one himself. That’s how his phenolic wood roller skate wheel with a rubber insert was born. The heat generated while skating makes the rubber insert expand. The pressure created then makes the wheel expand slightly too—giving you that “Sure-Grip” feeling when turning on your roller skates.

    The idea caught on with local skaters, and John started selling his roller skate wheels. Over the years, the Sure-Grip Skate Wheel Company evolved into today’s Sure-Grip Skate Co.. More than 85 years later, the company uses modern techniques like injection moulding and computer-aided design. Still, most products—including the original phenolic wheel—are made in the same local factory.
