Buying the Best Roller Derby Plates

Choosing the right roller derby plates is a personal decision. Several factors determine which plates are best for you. For example, ask yourself these questions:

    • Are you a jammer or a blocker? Jammers often benefit from lightweight and agile plates, while blockers tend to prefer stability and sturdiness.
    • Do you prioritise speed or control? A manoeuvrable plate allows quick direction changes but may reduce control at high speeds.
    • What is your preference regarding balance and feel? The kingpin angle, wheelbase length, and cushion hardness determine how your skates feel and respond.
    • Which toe stops do you use? Imperial US threading is standard in roller derby, while more artistic roller derby plates are equipped with European threading, which only fits metric toe stops.

The best way to discover what works for you? Try out different plates, for example, those of teammates with the same shoe size. Listen to others' opinions, but mainly consider what feels comfortable to you. Often, you'll find the ideal match after years of skating and using different plates for extended periods.

Wide Range of Roller Derby Plates

Sucker Punch Skate Shop specialises in everything for roller derby, from roller derby skates to roller derby protection. That's why you'll find such a large assortment of roller derby plates with us. We offer plates made from various materials and constructions, each with their own characteristics.

    Plastic (Nylon) Roller Derby Plates

For beginners, plastic (nylon) plates are a good choice. They have a low price and light weight. Their construction is relatively flexible, causing much of your energy to be lost in the bending of the plate. As a result, they are less efficient than metal plates.

Nowadays, we see more hybrid plates that combine the advantages of plastic and metal. Currently, they are especially popular in skateparks, but we expect them to appear more frequently in roller derby as well.

    Aluminium Roller Derby Plates

For more stability and strength, aluminium plates are the best choice. These roller derby plates are sturdy, durable, and rigid. Therefore, your energy largely goes into your propulsion. Moreover, you have better control over your wheels and more grip on the floor. More expensive models are lighter and stronger, making them last longer.

    Mounting a Roller Derby Plate

Your perfect balance between stability and manoeuvrability is crucial. It depends on three important factors:

    • The kingpin angle: a larger angle provides more manoeuvrability but less speed and stability.
    • The wheelbase length: a longer wheelbase offers stability, a shorter one allows for quicker manoeuvres.
    • The cushion hardness: softer cushions provide more agility, while harder ones offer more control.

We attach the plate to the boot with bolts. The position and adjustment of the plates are crucial for the performance and comfort of your skates. Incorrect placement causes problems with your balance and control. Therefore, leave this specialised task to Sucker Punch Skate Shop. We not only install new parts but also adjust your setups.
