    What is Roller Derby?

Roller derby is a contact sport. Two teams of five players each ride simultaneously on an oval track. The game consists of several ‘jams’, short matches of up to 2 minutes. The aim is to score points by getting a player, the ‘jammer’, past the other team's defending players, the ‘blockers’. Physical contact is allowed, but there are strict rules to ensure safety. For roller derby, you not only need the perfect roller derby skates, but also the right protection.

The perfect Roller Derby roller skates

The surface, your technique and your weight are just some of the factors that determine the shape and look of your skate. Pay attention to the following components when buying roller derby roller skates:

    • The boots have no heel and are low, to just below or just above your ankle. This ensures that your ankle is free to move, so you can surface the better low leg work.
    • The perfect size depends from person to person. Since you will be working hard in your shoes, it is important that they fit well. Remember that there is a certain weight on your feet. The shoe should be nice and tight around your foot so that it does not move in your shoe.
    • The plates for entry-level skates are often made of nylon/plastic. This is an attractive option because of its low weight and ditto purchase price.
    • The wheels are harder and wider inner wheels, suitable for balancing grip and glide on nice smooth surfaces. They differ in hardness between 84A (soft) and 103A (very hard). The size also varies, but most roller derby skaters opt for 59-millimetre wheels.
    • The brakes are height-adjustable. This is really a must in roller derby as the toe stops are not only used for braking, but also for finding balance and stability when pushing. At Sucker Punch, you will find toe stops in different sizes and hardnesses. The long standard stem is the most commonly used, the short stem is always high and close to the plate.

    Plates for Roller Derby skates

Plates for roller derby skates are available in different materials. Nylon/plastic is lighter and cheaper, but flexible. Aluminium and magnesium bases are stiffer. They feel more precise, are more efficient and transmit more energy to the wheels and additionally a better feel.

‘The manoeuvrability of your trucks depends on the angle at which your kingpins are in relation to the plate and the hardness of your cushions. That agility, together with the length of your wheelbase, determines how manoeuvrable your plate is. Also important is the balance between a long and a short wheelbase. A long one means more stability at speed, a short one makes for a more agile plate and can sometimes makes you lose control where you don't want to.’

How well you control your plates determines how you skate. The better aluminium plates are light, have great rigidity and are durable. They guarantee years of roller-skating fun. Worn-out shoes? Then we put the new ones on your trusted plates.
