    The basics: roller skate tools for standard adjustments

    Dial in your wheels, trucks, cushions and toe stops so your roller skates feel just right for you. In most cases, a classic skateboard T-tool is all you need. It’s perfect for tightening or loosening your roller skate wheels, adjusting your skate trucks for more or less stability, or making small tweaks to your axles.

    Some quad skates include a basic little tool in the box. Handy on the go, but usually limited in grip and leverage. Want to work precisely and for the long term? Then it pays to invest in a quality roller skate tool from, for example, PowerDyne (part of Riedell) or RollerBones.

    Toe stops: different systems, different tools

    Toe stops are a key part of every roller skate — especially on roller derby skates or dance skates. They determine how well — and how controlled — you brake. Depending on your plates you’ll need different tools.

    • Non-adjustable 5/16 toe stops: the basic version. To remove them you’ll need either a screwdriver or a hex key (depending on the manufacturer’s bolts).
    • Adjustable 5/8 toe stops: the standard on quality plates. They’re often secured with a 5/8″ nut — the PowerDyne Y3 tool is ideal here. The more leverage (the longer the handle on your tool), the easier it is to apply force on the nut.
    • Open toe-stop clamp systems: higher-end plates are open at the front and clamp the stop with a small bolt. You’ll usually use a 5 mm hex key for this. Always use the correct size to avoid damaging the bolt head. If it does get rounded, don’t force it. Contact our team so we can remove the bolt safely without damaging your plates.

    Maintain your bearings with the right roller skate tools

    Good roller skate bearings are essential for smooth, fast rides. If you swap wheels often, you know how frustrating that is without the right tool. Pick from these three bearing tools by RollerBones and PowerDyne:

    • Bones Bearing Tool: compact and handy — best if you don’t use spacers between your bearings. The claws need to open up behind the bearing.
    • PowerDyne Hand Tool: suitable for plastic hubs only. A solid choice if you replace bearings every now and then.
    • PowerDyne Bearing Press: the ultimate solution if you change bearings regularly. Works with all hub types (plastic and aluminium), with or without spacers. This tool seats bearings perfectly straight and lets you apply controlled pressure — indispensable on tight aluminium hubs.
